New August Issue

This month's issue

of Health Affairs features original research about state-level health
care spending, payment rates for dialysis, Medicaid waivers, the health
care workforce, global health systems, social determinants of health,
and more.

In particular, a number of articles cover the topic of temporary
licenses.

Ann Nguyen and coauthors examine how New Jersey's COVID-19 Temporary
Emergency Reciprocity Licensure Program

impacted workforce supply, and find that temporary licenses can serve as
a short-term solution to mitigate health care workforce shortages.

The paper by Nguyen and coauthors inspired a number of perspective
pieces about licensure programs as well.

In related Perspectives, Brendan Carr and Nicholas Gavin note that New
Jersey's temporary licensure program reveals a need to consider surge
capacity
,
to have a broadened understanding of access, and to maintain local care
priorities.

Bianca Frogner argues that states should move toward uniform licensure
requirements

to ensure continuity of care and make temporary licensure programs
permanent.

Elsewhere At Health Affairs

This week in Forefront, authors cover topics like pediatric "off-label"
medications, Georgia's response to the 1332 waiver suspension, and Long
COVID research.

Theresa Kudlick argues that the public should know that what pediatric
practitioners do is evidence-based

even when ethical or financial concerns prevent the clinical trials
required for full FDA approval.

Katie Keith discusses Georgia's response to warnings from the
Departments of Health and Human Services and Treasury

that the Georgia Access Model-a broad waiver under Section 1332 of the
Affordable Care Act-was at risk of being suspended.

Rachel Levine and colleagues at the Department of Health and Human
Services and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services
Administration issue a call to action on Long COVID research

as part of a National Research Action Plan on Long COVID.

With your support

we can continue to offer communitywide access to the industry-leading
perspectives featured every day on Forefront.
