Do you find yourself constantly saying the same thing over and over at work? For example, I often see lots of jokes playfully poking at the overuse of “let’s circle back” or “per my last email.”
Well, for me, my personal tagline at work is “The best time to get involved in state legislative races was in 2010. The next best time is now.” My colleagues hear me say it repeatedly, but it’s true.
In the 2010 midterms, the GOP deployed an unprecedented mobilization effort around state legislative races. Republicans spent $30 million on the cycle alone and as a result, flipped over 680 seats and 22 chambers from blue to red.
The good news is that we’ve taken the lessons learned from 2010 and applied them to our winning strategy, and the DLCC has been leading a generational shift in focus and resources on state legislatures. But we’re still feeling the effects of the 2010 losses today – and the fall of Roe is a painful example of that.
When the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the conservative justices said they were simply leaving it up to the states. But they knew they were shifting the fight to an uneven playing field: Anti-abortion extremists have already taken over the majority of state legislatures, and have spent the last decade stripping away access and passing restrictive laws ready to be enacted the second that Roe was struck down.
This was all a coordinated effort that was made possible by the GOP’s investment in local races. So, I’m going to say it again: The best time to get involved in state legislative races was in 2010. The next best time is now.
Winning back state legislatures takes time and effort, and I’m not going to over-promise anything: We can’t undo all the GOP’s damage in one election cycle. But we’ve got a plan to defend Democratic majorities, mount challenges in vulnerable GOP chambers, and put dent after dent after dent in Republicans’ state-level powerbase, election cycle after election cycle.
And it starts with more and more commitment from Democrats like you to vote for and amplify the state-level Democrats on your ballot in your area.
Will you please take this moment to pledge to get involved and vote in the 2022 midterms this November – with critical attention to state legislative races down the ballot? Add your name to let the DLCC know that you’re in this fight.
Thank you for being on this team. Your support does not go unnoticed.
