Hey everyone – Doris here.
On this day in 1965, the Voting Rights Act was signed into law by President
Lyndon B. Johnson.
This landmark legislation prohibits any form of discrimination for voting and
safeguards every American’s right to vote under the Fourteenth and Fifteenth
Amendments of the United States Constitution.
This legislation still forms the foundation of modern voting rights and
provides access to the ballot for millions of Americans. Without the Voting
Rights Act, I wouldn’t have been able to vote, and neither would over half of
our country. But unfortunately today, in 2022, conservative legislators across
the country are chipping away at these protections through gerrymandered
districts, unjust restrictions, and voter ID laws that make the ballot box
significantly less accessible to people of color. We still, even after 57
years, have to fight to keep our right to vote.
At the very core of our democracy is the fundamental right to vote, which is
why in Congress, I have been a champion for voting rights, and will always
fight for the continued access to voting.
We have come a long way as a country, and we still have a long way to go in
our continued fight for voting rights.
