Friends,
Today is an important anniversary, and I couldn’t let it pass by without taking the time to reach out and encourage our campaign supporters to take action. In 1965, Congress passed the Voting Rights Act, which was then ratified by President Lyndon Johnson. This Act created federal protections for voters across the country, mandating that every eligible American had the opportunity to participate in democracy.
However, in recent years the Supreme Court has put our democracy at risk by weakening the Voting Rights Act and paving the way for voter suppression. On the 57th anniversary of The Voting Rights Act, we’re asking our supporters to sign the petition encouraging the Senate to reform the filibuster and move forward with voting rights bills. Sign now [[link removed]]While we celebrate the progress made during the Civil Rights movement, we must remain vigilant about the threat of far-right extremism and intentional voter disenfranchisement that we face today. The freedoms in this country are never a given. They have to be won and defended.
As your Secretary of State, I stand in solidarity with the generations of suffragettes, civil rights activists, and voting rights advocates. Colorado now has the best election system in the country. But it is crucial that we continue to work toward progress and fight off the regressive attempts of the MAGA far-right.
So, sign on today and join me in the fight to protect voting rights on the federal level! [[link removed]]
