Fifty-seven years ago today, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was finally signed into law in an effort to ensure every eligible person could vote.
It wasn't an easy road to get there. Brave men and women like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., John Lewis, Rosa Parks, and countless others put their lives on the line to build the public pressure needed to finally win the right to vote.
Sadly, extremists have worked to gradually chip away at that victory. In just the 18 months since the January 6 insurrection, Republicans have launched an all-out assault on voting rights, introducing well over 400 voter suppression bills in 49 state legislatures.
Our rights and our democracy are under siege. Yet Senate Republicans continue voting to block the Senate from even debating legislation to protect voting rights as we approach one of the most important elections of our lives.

The right to vote is a fundamental right, and central to our entire democratic system. Without free and fair access to the ballot, our democracy is lost.
The Freedom to Vote Act would defend and expand voting rights for all Americans, reduce the influence of money in politics, prevent politicians from picking their voters through gerrymandering, and create new ethics rules to hold office holders to a higher standard. It has already passed in the House, but Republican obstruction has blocked the bill from receiving a vote.
