Dear John,
Today is the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, a landmark piece of legislation that was passed 57 years ago.
The Voting Rights Act marked a real turning point of America living up to our founding values, where all citizens have the freedom to participate in democracy. But as we’ve seen voting rights expand, we’ve also seen them be chipped away by the anti-American, anti-democracy radical right.
Let’s be clear: The radical right wants to make it harder for you to vote because they’re afraid of your voice at the polls.
For me, this goes back to the oath of office I first took as a 17-year old at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, and it carried through to my work at Pitt Cyber and the Brennan Center to defend our voting rights and elections.
When I first began my work as a voting rights lawyer, I never could have imagined our democracy would be in such peril. But I’m ready to get to Washington and defend our rights, and I won’t shy from a fight with those on the radical right who would attack our freedoms and throw out our elections in exchange for power.
If you’re ready to send a voting rights lawyer to Congress then I hope you’ll take a moment to chip in to my people-powered campaign that’s determined to defeat the radical right this November.
