John,
President Biden is expected to make a decision soon on whether or not he’ll use executive action to cancel federal student loan debt for millions of borrowers. And with the pause in payments set to expire at the end of this month, the president needs to hear from us now.
Forty-three million people in the U.S. face the crushing financial burden of ongoing education debt. Student loans widen the racial wealth gap, particularly for Black students. Loans with high interest rates keep people mired in debt their whole lives, simply for following our society’s recommendations to seek higher education.
Sign the petition to President Biden and urge him to cancel $50,000 in education debt for every borrower.
Most people live paycheck to paycheck, and given increased costs on everything from food to gas to housing, the 92% of fully employed borrowers may not be able to afford resuming student loan payments at the end of this month. Canceling student debt is a moral and racial justice issue, and a promise to voters that should be kept.
In fact, a recent survey found that nearly half of people in some key battleground states would be more likely to vote in this year’s midterms if President Biden keeps his campaign promise to cancel at least $10,000 in education debt for every borrower.
Even President Obama’s Education Secretary has called on the Biden administration to cancel all borrowers’ education debt. He noted that federal investment in higher education has gone down in the past 40 years, as student debt has gone up.
Another temporary payment freeze is not enough. Join me in calling on President Biden to cancel $50,000 in education debt for every borrower, now.
Without certainty about when or whether payments will restart, millions of people are still stuck in a terrifying limbo. Thank you for taking action today.
In solidarity,
Rashida
