Weekend Reading

Dear John,

Earlier this year, supporters like you donated to AFSC’s fundraising drive for youth summer programs. One of those programs was Liberation Summer Advocacy Camp in New York City. The camp helps high school students learn how to use photography, filmmaking, and other artforms to drive social change. Read more from AFSC’s Lewis Webb Jr. and four participants [link removed] .

Here are this week's picks to inform and support your activism:

After advocacy from community groups, Biden administration halts border construction: Since last month, AFSC and community groups have protested plans for replacement 30-foot border barriers at Friendship Park. For decades, the park has served as a binational meeting place on the border between the U.S. and Mexico. This week, the Biden administration responded to concerns. It announced it would halt construction and continue conversations with community members. (The San Diego Union-Tribune) [link removed]

Act now: Senators to vote on Inflation Reduction Act today: Thank you to everyone who contacted their senators to pass this critical legislation. We need urgent action to lower health care costs for millions of people and address climate change. We have strengthened our call for senators to stand against concessions to the fossil fuel industry and other harmful amendments. If you haven’t already, send a message today. [link removed]

Greetings from South Florida: Postcard campaign calls for TPS for Nicaragua, other nations: Every Wednesday, the Miramar Circle of Protection—which includes AFSC—sets up a table outside the ICE office in Miramar, Florida. Our coalition provides water, snacks, guidance, and moral support for people in immigration proceedings. Now people can write postcards to the Biden administration to advocate for protections for immigrants. (Miami Herald) [link removed]

WTO must do better to address COVID-19: The fastest way to end the pandemic is to ensure global vaccine access. But a recent action by the World Trade Organization does the opposite. Members voted against waiving intellectual property protections held by pharmaceutical companies, which would have helped low- and middle-income countries produce the vaccine. AFSC condemns the decision. [link removed]

Remembering Hiroshima and Nagasaki: On this day in 1945, the United States bombed Hiroshima. It was the first time a nuclear weapon had ever been used for warfare. Three days later, the U.S. dropped a second bomb on Nagasaki. In 2015, Hiroshima survivor Michiko Kodama wrote this account as part of the call for a world without nuclear weapons. [link removed]
