Jack, Republicans are chomping at the bit to criminalize anyone and everyone involved in seeking or providing abortion care.
On August 3, Senate Republicans blocked a bill that would protect abortion providers from prosecution even in states where abortion is legal.
It’s not enough that states across the country have implemented total or near-total abortion bans. Republicans want people who have to travel across state lines for abortion—and the providers who care for them—to suffer too.
If the Senate can’t pass this bill, state legislatures must take up the cause. Sign the petition: States must pass legislation to protect abortion providers.

Before the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June, New York and California passed legislation to protect abortion providers from prosecution in anticipation of the court’s final decision. As the devastating impacts of the ruling sweep the country, it’s becoming more imperative by the day that other state legislatures follow suit.
We can already see evidence of the need for legal protections for providers. In Indiana, Dr. Caitlin Bernard provided abortion care for a 10-year-old survivor of rape who traveled from Ohio for the procedure. Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita launched a defamation campaign against Dr. Bernard, calling for an investigation and vowing to look into her medical license.
As a result of Rokita’s intimidation, Dr. Bernard has been subjected to harassment and threats—including one to kidnap her daughter. Such violence and vitriol against abortion providers is all too common, and while legislation can’t deter everything, legal protections are a good place to start.

New York’s law is part of an abortion and reproductive healthcare legislative package. It protects providers from arrest, extradition, and legal proceedings in other states patients have traveled from to access abortion care in New York. California’s legislation is similar and protects patients and providers from civil liability based on claims in anti-abortion states.
State legislatures across the country must meet the moment and follow New York and California’s leadership to protect abortion providers. What happened to Dr. Bernard and her family is not the work of one anti-abortion vigilante. It’s what the anti-abortion movement has wanted all along. It’s not a matter of if something similar will happen again—it’s a matter of when.
