BY ALISSA BOMBARDIER SHAW and STEPH SCAGLIA | RepresentWomen’s Gender Parity Index (GPI), which weighs women’s representation at the national, state and local levels, shows how incremental and sporadic progress for gender balance truly is. According to this year’s Index, there are no states that have reached gender parity — a basement metric if we’re to call ourselves a truly reflective 21st century democracy. A majority of states earned a “D” grade for women’s representation in government, further proving that we are not even close to fully cheering “shattered ceilings” or taking victory laps for national “broken records.”

BY SHOSHANNA EHRLICH | Tucked away in a footnote of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the Supreme Court proclaims that some “proponents of liberal access to abortion…have been motivated by a desire to suppress the size of the African American population.” It thus implies that overturning Roe v. Wade will turn the tide away from this genocidal impulse.

But history tells a different story.

So, it is a great privilege to witness her expert wordsmithing and showmanship as the showrunner for Starz’s critically acclaimed P-Valley, a series that follows the lives of those who work for, in, and around the strip club joint The Pynk, an oasis of fun, pleasure and complicated sex work in the fictional town of Chucalissa, Miss.

“We felt it our responsibility to depict the war on Black women’s bodies raging in this conservative state,” said Katori Hall, creator of Starz’s P-Valley.
