Weekly Wrap Up Friend, Last week, Senators Joe Manchin and Chuck Schumer made a backroom deal to spend hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars, take aim at American manufacturers, and raise taxes on working families. They have dubbed the legislation the "Inflation Reduction Act" -- but that is just false advertising. Analysis shows that this behemoth of a bill will increase inflation and, contrary to President Biden's promises, raise taxes on hardworking Americans. The bulk of this tax burden will fall on Americans earning below $400,000 and nearly $17 billion in new taxes will be imposed on those earning less than $200,000. With Americans’ paychecks already stretched thin, President Biden wants to take even more of Americans’ hard-earned money to pay for his agenda. This bill would also super-charge the IRS. This plan would pay for 87,000 new IRS agents (to put that in perspective, we only have about 20,000 border patrol agents) to turn around and audit working families and small businesses, with nearly half of these audits targeting Americans making $75,000 or less. When I am on the road in our district meeting with Iowans and holding town halls, I continue to hear about the devastating consequences of inflation. Whether it is a small business owner who can’t keep the lights on, a working mom who can’t afford back to school shopping this year, or a farmer who has no clue how he’ll pay for fertilizer, it is simply cruel to push through legislation that is going to worsen inflation and make life harder and less affordable for Iowans. You don’t have to be an economist to know that spending more money during record-high inflation and raising taxes during a recession are terrible ideas. I will stand strong against this tax-and-spend proposal and work on solutions to get our economy back on track. Best, Upcoming Telephone Town Hall This Monday, August 8th, at 6:30 PM CT I will be holding a telephone town hall to answer your questions and provide an update on my work in Congress for Iowans. Hope you can join me! My View: Student loan cancellation is a slap in the face to working-class families There are few policy proposals more backward than President Biden’s and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s farce of “canceling” student loan debt. Debt cannot be “canceled” or erased — it can only be shifted to someone else. Truck drivers, farmers, bartenders, electricians and plumbers shouldn’t have to pay for someone else’s degree. Those who have sacrificed and worked hard to pay off their own student loans shouldn’t then have to take on someone else’s debt. But that is exactly what President Biden’s plans would force hardworking Americans to do. Read My Full Op-ed Funding to Hawkeye Community College for Addressing the Trucker Shortage This week, I announced that Hawkeye Community College will receive $132,359 to expand their commercial motor vehicle safety program! As our country faces a broken supply chain and a truck driver shortage, it is essential we prioritize licensing and encourage more truck drivers to get on the road. This program will help build our trucking workforce to get products on store shelves faster and reduce costs for families. I will continue fighting to bring federal resources back to Iowa. Read More Poll: Are you worried about kids being able to access vaping products? I’ve heard from parents, law enforcement, educators, and community officials throughout our district who are concerned about youth vaping. At a recent drug prevention roundtable in Postville, I heard that students as young as nine are participating in vaping. This shocked me – my youngest son, Jax, is nine. Substance abuse experts have told me that vaping products are potential gateways to other drug use and risky behavior. As a mom of two and a lawmaker, I believe we need to focus on prevention and work together to keep our kids safe. I want to hear your thoughts!
