Monday will be a historic day for New York State. After nearly two decades of discriminatory exclusion, the right to apply for a driver’s license will be restored for ALL New Yorkers, regardless of immigration status.

The DMV has officially published it’s guidelines ([link removed]) on how newly eligible residents can apply for a license beginning December 16, 2019. Now, undocumented applicants will go through the same process as all Standard License applicants, taking the same written and road test and paying the same fees.

We're working with partners to guarantee that the law is implemented fairly and effectively across the state. Check out the Greenlight Coalition's resources ([link removed]) , available in English and Spanish, to learn more about the Greenlight law.

For all new applicants, it’s important to know:
* Your Information Will Be Safe: We fought HARD to guarantee your data will be protected, and to make sure that the Greenlight law has the strongest privacy provisions of any in the country. Under the law, it is UNLAWFUL for the DMV to share applicants’ personal information with any immigration enforcement agency, unless there is a court order, judicial warrant, or validly issued subpoena requesting applicant data.
* Only You Can Apply for a License: Watch out for scammers! You must apply for a license and take the test yourself. Do not give money to anyone claiming they can help you obtain a driver’s license.
* You DO NOT Need a Social Security Number OR Proof of Legal Status to Apply: Applicants must provide documents proving their age, identity and residency but are no longer required to provide a Social Security number or proof of legal immigration status. Examples of valid documentation include: school IDs, pay stubs, bank statements, health insurance cards, utility bills, lease agreements or federal tax forms. * DMV Offices CANNOT Refuse to Issue Licenses: County clerks who run DMV offices cannot legally refuse to issue licenses to undocumented residents, though you can apply in ANY county if you feel unsafe applying in certain communities.

Next Monday, more than a quarter-million immigrants across New York State will be able to apply for a license so they can safely drive to work, take their children to school, and defend themselves from Trump’s deportation machine. This victory is a testament to the tenacity, perseverance, and dedication of the Coalition, and the immigrants, advocates, members, and allies who have fought tirelessly for nearly 20 years to make this law a reality.
