CFT leaders embark on back to school tour starting Monday
CFT president Jeff Freitas, Secretary Treasurer Luukia Smith, and Senior Vice President Lacy Barnes will hit the road next week on a statewide back to school tour. During the tour over the next couple of months they will visit CFT members across the state, representing both certificated and classified professionals who work at every level of education – from pre-k through our community college system.
According to CFT president Jeff Freitas, the tour is an opportunity to hear directly from CFT members about the great work they are doing and the excitement and challenges that the new school year brings.
“We know that the new school year is always a time of excitement and anticipation,” says Jeff. “But we also know that on top of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we are also facing huge staffing shortages, enrollment declines, and other serious issues. On the tour, we hope to continue our work at every level of the union to address these critical challenges.”
Look for more on the tour in the coming weeks on the CFT website and our social channels. And good luck to all who are starting back on campus in the coming days!
Push continues at state level to ensure part-time community college faculty have access to quality healthcare
While we were successful in winning $200 million in annual funding for part-time community college faculty healthcare in the state budget, there is still work to do at the state level to ensure that these funds and health benefits reach the faculty who need them most.
The governor’s office is now negotiating with legislative leaders on program language in a budget trailer bill that will have a critical impact on access to quality care.
