Jack, I became a poll worker during the early days of the pandemic. Like in many other districts, seniors had long been the primary folks helping voters in my precinct. But when Covid-19 and Republican inaction stole so many of our elders and community members, people like me filled in the gaps.

I'm glad I did it. I've served for four elections now. I've helped disabled voters cast their ballots, celebrated when first-time voters came in, stopped illegal activity, and more. While I've held a number of roles during elections, everything from volunteer to campaign manager, I still found myself learning so much about what it takes for an election to run smoothly—and how easy it is for bad actors to upend it.

Poll workers are a critical part of our democracy. It's an experience I value and believe you will too.

Created to help staff the 2020 election cycle, Power the Polls helped close the poll worker shortage by recruiting more than 700,000 people to work the polls in their communities. In 2022, they’re making it easier than ever to work the polls by connecting you directly to your local election administrators once you apply. They will also provide you with all the information you need to fully understand what to expect when you become a poll worker.

Jack, our communities rely on poll workers to help keep voting lines short, keep polling locations open, help provide translation services, answer questions, and more. With almost 100 days until the November elections, county administrators are currently making decisions about which polling locations they can staff and which ones they will have to close down. That means the time to apply to work the polls is NOW. When polling locations close, communities are left confused, wait times increase, and voter turnout decreases.

By signing up to work the polls today, you can make a significant impact on the election this November.
