Afghanistan in Transition: Women’s Perspectives.

On August 7th, Women in Security, Conflict Management, and Peace (WIIS India-WISCOMP) will host a closed-door virtual dialogue featuring former Afghan diplomats, senior civil society leaders, women’s rights activists, journalists, and scholars. They will converse with their Indian counterparts about the developments in Afghanistan and bring Afghan women’s voices center stage.

D.C. Student Consortium on Women, Peace and Security and WIIS Global Summer Book Club

Join the D.C. Student Consortium on Women, Peace, and Security and WIIS Global on August 24th at 7 PM (EDT) for their Summer Book Club event. This month, WIIS has partnered with the Consortium to co-host a conversation on the book The Seven Necessary Sins for Women and Girls by Mona Eltahawy.

Spotlight on the WIIS Community

Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean Women Committee Meeting

On July 13th, Loredana Teodorescu, President of WIIS Italy and Head of the Mediterranean Women Mediators Network Secretariat, spoke as rapporteur at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean Women Committee Meeting. It was a critical moment to discuss the role of women in social and armed conflicts and the need to involve them in the different stages of peace processes. Members from 14 countries and international experts joined the event. Among these members included Ouided Bouchamaoui, a former member of the National Dialogue Quartet and co-laureate of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2015, and Irene Fellin, NATO Secretary General's Special Representative for Women, Peace and Security and Honorary President of WIIS Italy.

Loredana also made a very special visit to WIIS Global headquarters in Washington, D.C., where she met with Ariela Blätter, President and CEO of WIIS Global, and the WIIS Team.

Vignettes of Resistance: En-Gendering the Worlds of Labour

On July 29th, WISCOMP (WIIS India) hosted Vignettes of Resistance: En-Gendering the Worlds of Labor, the inaugural event in The Book Cafe Series. This virtual dialogue brought together university students, young researchers, academics, and grassroots practitioners in an interactive space to better explore women’s work through an intersectional lens.

WIIS Brussels Voices: Climate Security Miniseries

In their new podcast miniseries, WIIS Talks Climate Security, produced with the support of the United States Mission to NATO, WIIS Brussels invites women to share their experience and expertise on the multi-dimension of climate security. In this episode, hosts Sabrine Dao and Sofiia Shevchuk welcome Elizabeth Smith, Research Assistant with the SIPRI Climate Change and Risk Programme, Madeline Babin, Research Associate for Climate Change Policy at the Council on Foreign Relations, and Laura Basagni, Mediterranean Program Manager at the German Marshall Fund of the United States. Together they discuss holistic views of climate security and the need for including diverse voices in combatting this global security threat.

Restoring Deterrence: Coercion and Crises in Southern Asia is a free online course produced by the Stimson Center's South Asia Program's Strategic Learning initiative. This course goes beyond academic theory and policy jargon to offer students the analytical tools necessary to assess the roles that coercion and deterrence play in Southern Asia. It covers deterrence relationships in the context of the “strategic chain” in Southern Asia, including China, India, and Pakistan, and explores deterrence concepts, crisis risks among nuclear-armed states, and key crisis case studies.

Request for Proposal: How Effective have Peacebuilding Organizations been in Working through Regional Multilateral Institutions?

The United States Institue of Peace (USIP) seeks an individual who can conduct a research project that examines the ways in which USIP and other comparable organizations engage with multilateral organizations. This research will address questions that aim to further understand the relationship between peacebuilding organizations and multilateral regional actors and will employ a qualitative case study methodology, drawing on the current experiences of USIP with regional multilateral bodies. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its changing context, this research will be conducted virtually.
