Hi Jack,
School starts back up at the end of the month, and the governor has shared an interim report from the Arkansas School Safety Commission pledging $50M for school safety.
There are some good things this money will fund – like the expansion of youth mental health training and providing access to mental health services (in person or through telehealth) to all students. But one part of their plan includes putting armed personnel on every school campus instead of instituting an assault weapons ban or simply raising the age limit to purchase a gun, which would be more effective and less costly in the near and far term.
Students, teachers, and other staff should be safe in schools, but putting more firearms in our schools won’t guarantee that.
I know for sure that at least a couple of my boys would feel LESS safe knowing someone at school is armed. Because why would they even need that, if they are safe at school? We have to do better than this.
Far too many of our leaders are making laws and recommendations about schools when they themselves have not taught or worked in a classroom.
Our teachers have raised their voices to fight for policies that will keep our schools safe from gun violence, but our leaders don’t hear them.
In Arkansas, we have the chance to elect new leaders this November who will listen and advocate for better education policies. But, it will take every one of us doing what we can to defeat the GOP in Arkansas.
We’re running a robust grassroots campaign, but I need you in my corner to defeat my Trump-backed opponent.
With less than 100 days until the election, I’m personally asking for your support today. Will you help me communicate with tens of thousands of voters over the next month?
