"When Joe Manchin first ran for the Senate in West Virginia, he famously shot a rifle bullet through the Waxman-Markey cap-and-trade bill, promising to 'take dead aim' against the bill 'because it is bad for West Virginia.' He is now sponsoring legislation that would amend the Clean Air Act to expressly require CO2 emission reductions from fossil-fuel power plants, and that specifically appropriates tens of millions of dollars to promote the Clean Air Act’s use as a framework for making climate policy."

Townhall (8/3/22) column: "Is this becoming a thing for left-wingers? Is air conditioning the next front in the climate change debate? It might be, though luckily, no politician here is insane enough to go to war with this fantastic appliance that keeps millions upon millions of tremendous people comfortable during the summer months. This appliance is killing mother Earth. Spain has decided to move on a law that would ban most places from setting their air conditioning temperature below 27 degrees Celsius. That’s 80 degrees Fahrenheit (via EuroNews): 'A debate has been sparked after Spain's government moved to prevent offices, shops and other venues from setting air conditioning below 27°C in the summer. It is part of plans to cut the country's energy consumption and limit dependency on Russian gas.' 80 friggin’ degrees! What’s the point of even setting the air conditioning at that point? It does not apply to homes, but you know the next level. Given how everyone went crazy during COVID, you know the Left would back an AC police to go around making sure people’s thermostats get set to the proper government-mandated setting."

Pelosi visits Taiwan—John Kerry hardest hit.

Politico (8/5/22) reports: "Beijing on Friday suspended climate talks with the U.S., as it announced a raft of measures in retaliation for U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan. The move marks a setback to intensified dialogue on climate change between the world's two biggest economies over the past year despite a rocky bilateral strategic relationship. China and the U.S., for instance, agreed a deal to cut methane emissions on the sidelines of the COP26 U.N. climate change talks late last year. It's now unclear whether Beijing will continue to honor its side of the agreement. Beijing's decision was announced on state broadcaster CCTV alongside other security-focused measures, including a cancelation of dialogues between the U.S. and Chinese defense ministries, a move that could increase the risk of a dangerous escalation in the Taiwan Strait. China also announced sanctions against Pelosi and her close family, accusing her of violating China's sovereignty over Taiwan. It's also carrying out missile tests and other military drills around Taiwan until Sunday, constituting what Taipei calls a de facto blockade."

California lusts for man-made disasters.

San Diego Union-Tribune (8/3/22) reports: "San Diego leaders have declared war on natural gas to drastically reduce the city’s carbon footprint and achieve zero emissions by 2035. This week, the city council voted unanimously to approve a radically revised climate action plan that calls for a ban on fossil fuels in new construction and electrification of nearly all existing buildings over the next 12 years. Dozens of cities across California have restricted the installation of gas stoves and heaters in new homes, including Encinitas. However, the modernization of entire neighborhoods will be a massive undertaking for which there are few precedents. The new climate plan, authored by Mayor Todd Gloria and his team, calls for a new building regulation to be drafted as early as next year. The details of the electrification of existing houses, office towers and other structures have not yet been worked out...The impact of the ban on natural gas in new construction is expected to be 'minor' with an independent analysis by the Building Electrification Institute estimating about 65 of the region’s 32,000 residential construction jobs will be eliminated. However, a broader vision of decarbonizing almost all existing buildings in the city would have a “much more significant impact,” according to the report. The city has about 6,200 natural gas distribution jobs, including electricians, plumbers, and engineers. While some workers are likely to be able to find work elsewhere, some 1,900 specialized workers may find themselves stranded."
