** Gwynne joins effort to precent Ashton Metrolink Line closure
------------------------------------------------------------

Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish, has co-authored a petition alongside Angela Rayner (MP for Ashton-under-Lyne) and Jonathan Reynolds (MP for Stalybridge and Hyde) calling on the Government to scrap its plans to suspend the Ashton Metrolink Line for at least two years during construction of the Crewe-Manchester phase of HS2.

The petition, which has been sent to the House of Commons and will be scrutinised by the HS2 Bill Select Committee, outlines the impact the proposed suspension will have on communities, jobs, and economic development across Tameside. It supports an additional petition already sent by Tameside Council.

In the petition, the three Tameside MPs state that “the full closure of the Ashton Metrolink Line for a period of at least two years – and the Promoter’s proposal to mitigate this with a replacement bus service – will undermine local, national and environmental strategies, cause unnecessary widespread travel disruption, and impact the socio-economic prospects of Tameside.”

The Petition calls on the Government to implement an alternative proposal developed by Transport for Greater Manchester and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority. This would include the provision of a depot facility at Ashton Moss, combined with a cross over and bus turning facilities at New Islington. This alternative proposal will enable a tram shuttle service to operate along the majority of the line between Ashton and New Islington, with a much shorter replacement bus service for customers who are unable or choose not to walk or cycle into the city centre.

In a joint statement, Angela Rayner, Andrew Gwynne and Jonathan Reynolds said:

“We sincerely hope that this intervention from all three Tameside MPs will reinforce to the Government the serious impact that the suspension of the Ashton Metrolink Line will have for people across Tameside.

We desperately need rail investment across Greater Manchester, and we support improved connectivity with regions. However, the Government’s current proposals are just not up to scratch. They’ll sever a vital transport connection, and waste taxpayers’ money in the process. It’s a botch job and it won’t wash.

We urge the Government to meet with Transport for Greater Manchester and implement sensible and cost-effective proposals which will ensure that the Ashton Metrolink line can remain open for business during this period of HS2 construction.”

** Gwynne tells BT CEO to "do your job" over industrial dispute
------------------------------------------------------------

Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish, has written to the CEO of the BT Group and urged him to get around the table with Communications Workers Union (CWU) representatives to resolve ongoing industrial action over pay.

Gwynne's intervention comes after the CWU took industrial action on the 29 July and 1 August. The strikes represented the first ever national call centre strike and were related to BT's decision to impose a £1500 flat payment for all payment bands this year. This decision was made without meaningful consultation with unions and comes off the back of a pay freeze in 2021. This means BT and Openreach workers have suffered real terms pay cuts over the last two years.

Writing in his capacity as MP for Denton and Reddish, Gwynne slammed BT CEO Philip Jansen for refusing to enter negotiations with the CWU. Gwynne also wrote to the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport urging her department to do more and ensure BT enters negotiations.

In his letter to Jansen, Gwynne wrote:

"The UK is facing the most profound cost-of-living crisis in a generation, and workers are finding that their pay packets no longer cover their basis needs. This crisis, coupled with the lack of a substantial pay rise for the past three years means that BT and Openreach workers are going home with less in their pocket every month.

I have even heard of one BT workplace setting up a food bank inside a call centre when staff could no longer afford essentials. This is despite BT Group recording record profits, and your own salary increasing by 32% last year. I fail to see how you can justify a salary of £3.5m - 86 times the average salary of a BT Group worker - whilst your staff continue to struggle to make ends meet.

It is imperative that you do your job and get around the table to negotiate.

BT and Openreach workers are key workers, who play an essential role in the running of our economy and the vital rollout of full-fibre broadband. You owe it to BT Group workers, your customers, and the public to help bring an end to this dispute and find a pay deal that is fair to all BT Group workers."

** Gwynne welcomes news of parks funding for Tameside
------------------------------------------------------------

Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish, has welcomed the announcement that Tameside has been selected as one of the 85 local authorities that will receive £85,000 to create and improve green spaces in the area.

The funding has been allocated to several areas most deprived of outdoor space. From community gardens to formal greens and town parks – councils will be able to choose the nature and location of the new or improved parks in their local area,

The announcement was made by the Government to mark Love Parks Week 2022 ([link removed]) , an initiative organised by Keep Britain Tidy and in partnership with Regatta. Gwynne, who helped found local volunteering group Friends of the Tame Valley and is a keen gardener, expressed hope that the funding would go towards improving green spaces in Audenshaw, Denton and Dukinfield.

Commenting, Andrew Gwynne said:

“I’m very pleased that Tameside has been selected for this green space funding. I hope that the funding will go towards improving parks and outdoor spaces across Denton, Audenshaw and Dukinfield.

I’ve long called for better outdoor provision in urban areas like Tameside. As someone who has spent lots of time exploring the Tame Valley, or litter picking with local community groups, I know all too well the benefit that the great outdoors can have on your mental and physical health. We’re lucky in Tameside that we have so many wonderful volunteers who care for our parks and green spaces.

I look forward to seeing some improvements over the coming months and years ahead.”

Andrew in Parliament

Parliament is currently in recess, but earlier this week Vicky Foxcroft and I wrote to the Secretary of State for Health, requesting an urgent update on the rollout of Evusheld.

Evusheld is a pre-exposure prophylaxis designed to protect those who are acutely vulnerable to Covid-19. It was granted approval by the MHRA four months ago, yet the Government have still not outlined how and when they will deploy it.

In my capacity as Shadow Public Health Minister, I've been inundated with clinically vulnerable, clinically extremely vulnerable and immunosuppressed patient support groups who feel totally let down.

We cannot afford any further delays. Read the full story here ([link removed]) .

** Celebrating Friends of Reddish South Station 🚂
------------------------------------------------------------

I had a lovely evening last Friday celebrating the 15th anniversary of the Friends of Reddish South Station - a group initially set up to prevent to formal closure of the station in Network Rail’s 2007 Route Utilisation Strategy.

We won that battle, and ever since I’ve been working with them to get a passenger rail service secured for this line. We are now in the Government’s #RestoringYourRailway ([link removed]) programme and a Strategic Outline Business Case is being drawn up by Transport for Greater Manchester ([link removed]) to submit back to Ministers at the Department for Transport
([link removed]) .

Anyway, what a brilliant group, and especially to Tom, Kim, Alan, Dot, Dave and Noel who work so hard on this campaign (and on looking after the award-winning station platform itself, which looks magnificent).

🎩 And they sprung a BIG surprise on me, by making me their Honorary President. Thank you! 👏🏻

** Dane Bank Green Space opens to the public 🦆 🌳
------------------------------------------------------------

It was my pleasure on Saturday to officially open Dane Bank Green Space ([link removed]) off Windsor Road. These fields were protected from development and a new lease was signed so that the residents could create a new nature area for the West-End of Denton.

Five years on, and a lot of hard work and dedication later, it’s great to see the area open to the public, with fantastic nature trails, a woodland area planted, a picnic area created, and space for a forest school.

I went over with the Team Denton West ([link removed]) Councillors, Councillor George Jones ([link removed]) , Councillor Mike Smith ([link removed]) and Councillor Brenda Warrington
([link removed]) . We had great fun (as did Lyle!!)

But from me, a BIG well done to all the DBGS volunteers that have made their dream a reality! 👏🏻

** Another buzzing Worker Bee Market 🐝
------------------------------------------------------------

I then went over to Reddish for the monthly Worker Bee Markets ([link removed]) at Broadstone Mill. It’s always a great event with a good mix of food, crafts and artisan traders. There were 53 stalls in total, including lots of local traders from Reddish, the Heatons and Denton.

This month’s charity on site was Home-Start HOST ([link removed]) , of which I’m proudly one of the Patrons. It’s great to see them here today.

** A busy but brilliant Sunday 🦉 🎡 🎺 ☀️
------------------------------------------------------------

On Sunday I was lucky enough to be invited to a number of wonderful local events, the first was the fantastic Artisan Market at Denton Civic Square. Hopefully the first of many. Well done to Little Owl Events ([link removed]) and all the traders.

🎡 I then went over to Victoria Park for the Party in the Park, a brilliant four day event which ended on Monday tomorrow. Lyle had great fun (as did I)

A big well done to the Discover Denton events organisers, especially Tony Moran, Councillor Denise Ward ([link removed]) , Councillor ([link removed]) Vincent Ricci ([link removed]) and the Discover Denton
([link removed]) volunteers. 👏🏻

And my final outing was to Team Audenshaw ([link removed]) ’s “Band in the Park” which I was asked to officially open. It’s took place the Memorial Gardens on Audenshaw Road.

It wasn’t the forecast but the sun ☀️ was shining, the band was playing and the crowds were out with their picnics 🧺 In other news, Lyle had *another* Ice Cream! 🍦

A big well done to Councillor Teresa Smith ([link removed]) and Councillor Charlotte Martin ([link removed]) for organising the day and to Droylsden St John's Castle Brass Band ([link removed]) 👏🏻

A Tribute to Cllr Sheila Bailey

I was so very sad to hear the news on Wednesday that Councillor Sheila Bailey had passed away. She was a formidable person and an amazing politician; a servant of Stockport.

My former Office Manager, and that of Andrew Bennett, before me, and a Stockport Councillor representing Edgeley and Cheadle Heath for over 30 years, she was Labour through and through. Above all she was a good friend.

Rest in peace Sheila.

My thoughts and prayers are with Philip, Nicky and family.
