Dear John,

You are likely familiar with the story of Barronelle Stutzman, the Washington state floral artist being sued simply because she desires to create her custom floral art in accordance with her religious beliefs.

Because of this, she was targeted by the Washington attorney general and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

She even began receiving hate mail and death threats, which forced her to install security cameras and change her regular routines for security reasons!

Fast-forward six years and Barronelle’s case is now in the hands of the United States Supreme Court.

If the High Court declines to hear Barronelle’s case, the Washington Supreme Court’s ruling against her will stand. And if that happens, she could lose her business and her life savings.

Barronelle is a courageous woman of God. She won’t betray her faith, and she won’t back down. But she relies on your generosity to continue the fight.

John, your year-end gift today will help protect Barronelle and others like her as they stand against growing hostility toward religious freedom.

How Barronelle’s story began

Barronelle owns Arlene’s Flowers in Richland, Washington. She loves her family, speaking through the floral art she creates for her customers, providing jobs for her employees, and honoring God in all she does.

Then one day, without warning, her life turned upside down.

It started when a longtime customer named Rob came into the shop looking for Barronelle. He wanted her to design the floral arrangements for his same-sex wedding.

Barronelle had known and served Rob for nearly 10 years—she considered him a friend. But she knew that because of her Christian beliefs about marriage, she could not create custom floral art to celebrate that particular event.

So Barronelle walked Rob to a quiet part of her shop, took his hand in her own, and gently told him why she couldn’t do what he asked. She then referred him to three florists who she knew would do a good job for him. Rob said that he understood, and they hugged before he left the shop.

Barronelle thought that was the end of it. But the situation escalated quickly.

First, the Washington attorney general heard about what happened through a social media post and decided to file a lawsuit against Barronelle. And then, the ACLU joined in and also sued her.

As the storm around Barronelle grew, she experienced first-hand the legal attacks that many are facing for daring to run their business and live their lives consistently with their faith.

Your year-end gift today will help ADF finish the year strong as we continue to defend people like Barronelle who are boldly standing to protect religious freedom for us all.

Without you, people like Barronelle would have nowhere to turn for help

Barronelle wasn’t prepared for these attacks.

She didn’t have extra money lying around to hire an attorney. She didn’t have legal knowledge to take on a state government and a massive legal organization like the ACLU set on punishing her for living out her deeply held beliefs. And she didn’t know how to calm the storm that surrounded her life.

But Barronelle had faith.

And then something big happened. She had help—lots of it.

God used your faithful support to help provide Barronelle with a team of ADF attorneys that has stood with her free of charge. You lifted her up in your prayers and helped calm her spirit in the midst of the turmoil.

Barronelle holds a belief that millions of people of faith across the world share—that marriage is a union of one man and one woman.

It’s probably a belief that you share, John.

And as you know, your beliefs affect how you live your life.

If the government and the ACLU succeed in forcing a grandmother like Barronelle to celebrate an event that violates her faith, why wouldn’t opponents of religious freedom come after you next?

The truth is they won’t stop. We see new threats to religious freedom emerging almost every day.

To prepare for the legal challenges that we’ll face in 2020, we need to raise $10.3 million by December 31. Will you prayerfully consider making a gift today?

Hostility toward your religious freedom is growing—your year-end gift will help us fight back

More and more often, people of faith like Barronelle are being threatened and punished for living according to their beliefs. Opponents of religious freedom are leading the charge. They are primed, well-funded, and ready for a fight.

Just look at what the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is doing.

The SPLC has labeled ADF as a “hate group” for defending people who are living by their deeply held beliefs about marriage that are shared by millions of people across the world. They have decided that these beliefs are no longer welcome in the public square. And they’re working to influence corporate, media, and government officials to reject religious freedom.

This attack on ADF is an attack on you and your faith, John.

Thankfully, God has provided a way to fight back and protect religious freedom. He is using your prayers and financial support to help ADF stand against the opposition and defend people of faith like Barronelle.

And when we stand together, we can win. We do win.

Through God’s blessing (John 15:5) and your faithful support, you’ve helped ADF secure ten victories at the U.S. Supreme Court since 2011. And we’re winning nearly 80 percent of all our cases.

We are confident that many more victories lie ahead, so please continue to help us show up for the fight.

Activist organizations like the ACLU and SPLC are backed by hundreds of millions of dollars. And they are demanding that the government deny your right to peacefully live out your religious beliefs.

We must be prepared to fight back when our freedoms are threatened. Will you help?

When people of faith stand, pray, and unite in action, we can defeat those who seek to deny our religious freedom.

Thank you for giving generously.
