John – here's another reason we're worried about independent state legislature theory, which the Supreme Court could use to give gerrymandered Republican legislatures near-total control of federal elections:

Reuters: "Prominent Republicans including former U.S. Attorney General William Barr… launched a new legal group they say is aimed at defending state legislatures’ right to set election laws… Restoring Integrity and Trust in Elections was co-founded by Karl Rove... The group opposes courts intervening in state election laws and has already filed briefs in court cases over new voting restrictions"

Sound familiar? They want to give state legislatures full control over elections, pushing state courts and governors out of the process and undermining the separation of powers fundamental to our system of government!

Oh, and in addition to Barr and Rove, the GOP power players behind this new group include a wealthy hotelier and a lawyer who argued in court for voter suppression policies, both connected to Donald Trump.

That means this group brings serious money and legal firepower, and we MUST be able to go toe to toe with them in the fight for democracy on the ground as SCOTUS considers independent state legislature theory. Will you pitch in now?

Barack Obama: "If adopted wholesale, this theory could eliminate the roles of governors, commissions, and state supreme courts in drawing fair congressional maps - and vetoing or invalidating gerrymandered maps when necessary. We have seen what happens when we limit access to the ballot and threaten fair elections in America. It's a dark road, and one we shouldn't travel down again."
