ISRA Thursday Bulletin - July 25, 2019

Executive Directors Message

I know many of you are wondering about the status of the lawsuit against the Gun Dealer Licensing Certification Act. All I can tell you is that the lawsuit has been filed and the defendants (State of Illinois) have been served. As of this time, the defendants have not answered the complaint. The coverage in the media has been pretty good. One of the
responses from the other side is we needed the Gun Dealer Licensing Certification Act (GDLCA) to stop straw purchases. I would like to remind everyone that straw purchases are already illegal. In fact, in 2008, during the 95th General Assembly, an enhanced penalty was passed to further deter straw purchases. That bill, HB5524, passed out of the Illinois House of Representatives. It is interesting that the only people who did not vote for it were 18 Chicago
Democrats. The bill did much better in the Illinois Senate. One of the sponsors of that bill was Kwame Raoul, the present Attorney General.

The ISRA Smallbore shooters are at the National Championships and are doing well. In the Whistler Boy Match (so-called because there is a figure of a boy whistling atop the trophy), the ISRA Gold Team and the ISRA Silver Team took 2nd and 3rd place, respectively. Josie Peters won the National Collegiate Any Sight Match Championship. Rylie Passmore won the 3 Position National
Championship in the sub-junior category and Martina Gratz won 2nd in the 3 Position Intermediate category. The ISRA Junior Prone Team placed 2nd behind the Texas team; they were edged out of 1st place by one point. Still, they fired the highest score anyone can remember an Illinois Junior Team ever firing. They only dropped 17 points out of a possible 1600 points. Well done.

The USA High School Clay Target National Championships have concluded in Mason, Michigan. I am proud to say Calhoun High School came in 2nd, breaking 962 targets out of 1000. They were beaten by Roseau High School, of Minnesota, by just two birds. Five other Illinois teams were in the top 100. Illinois has about 90 High School trap teams. Nationally, there are over 1000 high
schools in the High School Clay Target Program with over 32,000 students participating. The great thing about shooting is you don’t have to be 7 feet tall and weigh 300 pounds to be successful. There are also 70 and 80-year old’s still enjoying the shooting sports. Try that with football and some of the other sports out there. I know, every day I hear my shoulders pop and my knees squeak from playing football, but I still enjoy shooting.

The Gun Sanctuary movement is still marching along in Illinois. In St. Clair County, both O’Fallon Township and St. Clair Township became Sanctuary Townships. Way to go!
