Dear Friends,
Last week, I voted to pass the Assault Weapons Ban Act, which restores a 1994 ban on assault weapons that kept weapons of war off our streets and out of the hands of dangerous individuals.
These weapons are designed for the battlefield. They're meant to inflict as much destruction as possible in the shortest amount of time, and have become the weapon of choice for mass shooters — as we've seen most recently with the tragedies in Uvalde, TX and Highland Park, IL.
We know that this legislation will keep our communities safer. In 1994, a ban on assault weapons decreased the number of mass shootings in the US by 43%. Ten years later, Republicans let this ban expire. What followed was the reversal of progress: the number of mass shootings tripled.
The American people are tired of living in fear and want change. When President Biden signed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act into law — the first major piece of gun legislation in nearly 30 years — I said it would be the first step, but not the last. And I'm fighting to continue the progress we've made to save lives.
I want to hear from you: Do you support an assault weapon ban? Please take a moment to record your opinion below.
