In the words of Michael Gove: This Government is not functioning!

I hope you and your families are well. Here's a roundup of what I've been up to in Cardiff North and Westminster these last few weeks.

As Liz Truss takes a lead in the polls to become the next Conservative Party Leader, both Truss and Sunak have been doing everything in their power to distance themselves from the last twelve years of Conservative failure, despite until very recently, ferociously defending their record, Party and leader.

And every day they continue to battle it out internally is another day this government fails to function. Michael Gove's words, not mine. And every day, people are bearing the brunt of this failure. Whether severe passport delays mean visits to see family and holidays cancelled, DVLA licence applications lost in the abyss of department incompetence and families continuing to struggle in the cost of living crisis while oil and gas giants make eye-watering profits.

The reality is that this Government is tired, mired in scandal and all out of ideas on how to get us out of this mess. Only Labour has a plan to give Cardiff North and the rest of the country the fresh start it deserves.

Re-selected as Cardiff North's Parliamentary Candidate
A massive thank you to Cardiff North Labour Party members, our unions and the Co-operative Party for unanimously re-selecting me to be Cardiff North's Welsh Labour Parliamentary candidate at the next General Election. I won't let Cardiff North down!
Cost of Living Workshop
Everyday I receive email after email from Cardiff North constituents worried about skyrocketing energy bills and the cost of living. I recently held a free cost of living workshop in Whitchurch where local residents could come along and speak to experts and charities for advice and support. It was to great to be joined by our new Whitchurch and Tongwynlais Councillors and Julie Morgan MS.

This was the first of its kind in Cardiff North and I intend to hold others across the constituency. Please get in touch if you need any support in the meantime.

Heath Park Trees Vandalism Update
I have been absolutely appalled by the pointless destruction of the trees in Heath Park recently. I have been working alongside your local Heath and Birchgrove councillors and South Wales Police to catch those responsible and ensure the trees are replaced. Your local councillors have provided an update below:

✅ Police have apprehended five 11-13 year olds as potential suspects and are investigating.
✅ Police have committed to increasing patrols in the area this Summer.
✅ Trees will be replaced and local community will be involved in re-planting.
✅ Other incidents of vandalism reported and we’re in discussions with police about reducing anti-social behaviour.

City Hospice's Forever Flowers

I’m supporting City Hospice's Forever Flowers campaign in memory of lost loved ones. Their sunflowers are brightening up Cardiff Castle from 30th Jul-14th Aug in celebration of people’s lives. Such an important campaign to talk about grief, reflect and celebrate life with a lasting tribute.

Anti-social behaviour awareness week
Thanks to PC Rees and PCSO Roberts for your time recently. Good to discuss the great work South Wales Police are doing and to hear more about Anti-Social Behaviour Awareness Week. Thanks for all your hard work in keeping our communities safe and I look forward to continuing our work together.

Passport Delay Update
More than 50,000 people are waiting longer than 10 weeks for their passports. It’s clear this UK Government isn’t functioning. My team and I will continue working hard to secure positive outcomes for Cardiff North constituents.

It’s Love Parks Week! Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers who keep our parks and green spaces clean, tidy and safe. I’m here in Hailey Park where I walk Cadi most days, in solidarity with campaigners against the proposed pumping station.

Calling out Oil and Gas Giant Shell

While the likes of Shell and BP make huge profits, we face a serious and worsening energy bills crisis. It’s clear they’ve no ambition to properly invest in renewable energy that would both cut bills and decarbonise the energy system. I called out Shell’s greenwashing at Environmental Audit Select Committee recently.
Labour Supports BT/Openreach Strike Action

In just 15 months, BT has made £1.7bn in profit. Less than 5% went to frontline workers' pay while its CEO had a 32% pay rise. It's time the UK Government did it's job and got BT bosses around the table with the CWU union to ensure better pay and conditions for BT Openreach staff.

The energy price crisis is spiralling. Yet the Business, Energy and Industry Strategy Secretary doesn't even have the decency to turn up to the Environmental Audit Select Committee. A made a Point of Order on this blatant disregard for scrutiny. I agree with the Deputy Speaker, the Secretary must apologise and appear before the Committee urgently.
South Wales Police Queen's Award

Fantastic to welcome South Wales Police Special Constabulary to Speaker’s House recently to celebrate the Special Constabulary receiving the Queen’s - a recognition of their hard work and dedication to keeping our communities safe. Thank you for all that you do.
