On Tuesday, the voters of Kansas proved to the country that the American people are not done fighting to protect abortion access.
By a 58.8%—41.2% vote, Kansans rejected an amendment that would have allowed the state legislature to ban abortion — sending a clear message that voters across party lines refuse to let Republican politicians take away their reproductive rights.
Kansas has given us a path forward. Now, we need to follow their playbook in Pennsylvania. While abortion access is currently legal in PA, we need to be clear-eyed about the fact that this access is hanging on by a thread and the Republican state legislatures know that. We can't take it for granted.
John, abortion is on the ballot in Pennsylvania, so we need to ask: Will you chip in $5 or more now to elect a pro-choice leader — Summer Lee — to Congress and help grow our movement for reproductive freedom?
The results we saw in Kansas on Tuesday confirmed what we know to be true — the vast majority of Americans support access to abortion, and there is no state where banning abortion is popular.
But Republicans have proven time and time again that they will ignore the will of the people to put in place extreme abortion bans. Just last month, Republicans in the Pennsylvania State Senate voted to pass legislation including a Constitutional Amendment that would ban abortion in the state.
To protect reproductive rights in PA, we need to elect a Democratic governor, senator, and flip control of the state legislature. And in order to do that, we need to ensure high voter turnout in Western Pennsylvania — specifically in PA-12.
In Summer's first run for the state legislature, we DOUBLED voter turnout, and we can do it again. If we pull together now, we can elect a pro-choice champion to Congress and continue the vital work it will take on the ground to ensure Pennsylvania remains a state where people have the right, freedom, and access to abortion.
