Friend,
For military spouses, sacrifice comes with the territory. There are missed Christmases, birthdays, and anniversaries spent far apart - sleepless nights. And sometimes, unspeakable loss. I cannot emphasize enough how important military families are to this country and how much they give without thanks or recognition.
That’s why I’ve been working since my first day in the Senate to eliminate the “Widow’s Tax.” It’s an unfair reduction in survivors’ benefits – up to $1,000 every month, and an average of $11,000 every year. The result is tens of thousands of dollars lost by families trying to pick up the pieces after losing a loved one. This is something that has been promised to military families for decades. It was never done. Now, we did it.
This tax is incredibly costly for the more than 65,000 families it affects. It’s money they could use to pay down debt, pay their mortgages, and go back to school. It’s income that could help pay for their kids’ education. And it’s money their spouses earned. Giving survivors access to their full benefits is, simply put, the decent thing to do.
Fortunately, after the National Defense Authorization Act is signed, that tax will be a thing of the past. Folks, this is a real victory. It’s a victory for people right here in Alabama, like Cathy Milford in Mobile, who has taught me more about resilience and hard work than she knows. I want to thank everyone who has been a part of this push to end the Widow’s Tax.
We owe our military families a debt we simply cannot repay. Nothing can take away the pain of losing a spouse or parent. But what we can do – what we’ve done today – is make sure we don’t add undue financial stress to an already heartbreaking situation.
People say Washington doesn't work. On the issues that make the news I have to agree with that. But I can look at my own party and across the aisle and see people who put faith in their country over partisan division. That's how we were successful for military families with this effort, and that's the blueprint moving forward.
Thank you,
Doug Jones
