Corporate carelessness has brought the world’s sea turtles to the brink. Nearly all species of sea turtles are endangered, with three species listed as critically endangered.
The culprits: industrial fishing practices and, even more worrisome, plastic waste.
Plastics are killing sea turtles and other ocean life. Over half of the world’s sea turtles have ingested plastic waste they mistake for food. Plastic debris can puncture organs or get stuck in a sea turtle's digestive system. Often, turtles become tangled in plastic debris. It’s a heartbreaking scenario.
At Food & Water Action, we care about the health of the planet and all its wildlife. That’s why we're doubling down to end plastic pollution by calling for a halt to new plastic plants, as well as oil and gas drilling. Will you make a gift today to help our fight to stop plastic pollution?
Plastics are fueled by fracking. Fracking provides the cheap raw material called ethane which is used for plastics production. And, more fracking equals more profit in plastics (which equals… you guessed it: more plastics) — it’s what we call the fracking-to-plastics pipeline.
More plastic created means more waste polluting our rivers, lakes and oceans. Plastic doesn’t decompose. Instead, it breaks down into microplastic molecules that end up in everything, including in the stomachs of marine mammals, sea turtles and birds — and even in the air.
Oil and gas corporations don’t care what destruction they leave behind as long as they make a profit. But we do care! Food & Water Action is calling for a nationwide ban on fracking and all new oil and gas infrastructure to cut plastic pollution off at the source.
Food & Water Action and its affiliated organization, Food & Water Watch, are advocacy groups with a common mission to protect our food, water and climate.
