Dear John,

Before the vote, I wanted to make sure you saw Doug's email below. Our U.S. Senators could hit the floor at any minute to vote on the Inflation Reduction Act. Make no mistake, this is our chance to pass the most significant climate bill in our nation's history.

If passed, the bill could cut our country's emissions by a whopping 40% — but we need all 50 senate Democrats to vote "yes" for it to advance to the House of Representatives. Will you email our Senators and ask them to keep doing all they can to pass this momentous bill and its wide range of climate protections?

Thank you,

Will Bertellotti, Communications Coordinator, OLCV.

––––– FORWARD –––––

Dear John,

In an unexpected announcement last week, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer unveiled the most sweeping climate deal to ever reach Congress as part of the Inflation Reduction Act. If passed, this bill would set the United States on a path to lower emissions by close to 40% by 2030.

We would not have made it to this moment without your advocacy and the leadership of elected climate champions throughout our nation, like Oregon’s own Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley. The U.S. Senate is voting any day now, so we need to send our senators one more message thanking them for getting us here and asking them to remain steadfast in the fight to get it passed!

While Oregon has fierce environmental advocates in our two U.S. senators fighting for us in the battle against climate change, this is still an urgent ask— the Senate is likely to vote on this bill before the end of the week, with the U.S. House of Representatives’ vote close behind next week.

What’s more, is that we will need the vote of all 50 Democratic senators to pass the Inflation Reduction Act and the incredible climate-protecting provisions it includes. Will you email our senators telling them to do everything they can to pass this meaningful climate bill?

If passed, this bill would give the American people:

-support and increased accessibility for renewable, electric energy options
-climate goals towards pollution-free electric vehicles that don’t produce unhealthy emissions
-reliable domestic clean energy production
-incentives to pivot from the use of fossil fuels
-investments in environmental justice communities with specific support for working families who often aren’t able to afford the shift away from fossil fuels.

Democrats have spent years talking about their role opposing climate change, so now it’s time to turn those words into action by passing this comprehensive bill. Climate champions like Senators Wyden and Merkley have gotten us this far, and we can’t allow Big Oil to stop us now. Let’s show our support for our senators to keep up the battle for our climate and pass the Inflation Reduction Act!

Regrettably, the details settled on between Senators Schumer and Manchin for this climate agreement aren't perfect, but thankfully, the net positives for our climate that would be achieved by passing this bill greatly outweigh the negative. As people across the world and right here in Oregon experience dangerous heat waves and extreme weather conditions, passing this historic deal on climate action can’t come soon enough.

Now, we must use our voices by sending a message encouraging our senators to continue spearheading impactful climate action and get this bill passed!

Thank you,

    Doug Moore, Executive Director, OLCV
