Hello, friends. I wanted to make sure you saw the email I sent you yesterday about Tuesday's terrifying election results Michigan and Arizona. In all my years, I've never seen our democracy in greater danger. — Robert Reich
Dear John,
On Tuesday, Donald Trump’s plan to rig the 2024 presidential election took a big step forward.
In Arizona, January 6 insurrectionist and election denier Mark Finchem won the Republican nomination for secretary of state, the chief elections officer in the state. And in Michigan, Republicans nominated Kristina Karamo, another Big Lie conspiracy theorist, for the same office in her state.
If these two Trump cronies win in November, they will be in charge of overseeing the 2024 presidential election in two of the most important battleground states in the country.
They will have the power to open or close polling places, count votes, and certify who won. They’re like the referees and scorekeepers of our elections, and there’s simply no way we can count on a fair election in 2024 with Trump allies filling those offices.
Here’s the big challenge: A lot of people who vote in presidential elections have no idea who their secretary of state is and might not even bother voting. Unless we can get the word out to voters about what’s at stake in these elections, these election deniers could actually win.
Inequality Media Civic Action is planning to run the hardest-hitting midterm election education program in our history to sound the alarm about these positions. Will you make a donation to get the truth out and help stop Trump and his Big Lie conspiracy theorists from taking control of our elections?
I can’t overstate how truly unhinged these two Republican secretary of state nominees are.
Mark Finchem, the Arizona nominee, was personally at the January 6 insurrection and is a member of the white supremacist Oath Keepers militia. He continues to challenge the 2020 election results to this day.
Kristina Karamo, the GOP nominee for secretary of state in Michigan, not only claims that Donald Trump is currently the rightful president of the U.S., but she has also said that abortion is a form of satanic sacrifice and that “demonic possession is real” and can be transmitted sexually. (No, I am not making that up. She really said it.)
As if that’s not bad enough, Republicans have also nominated Trump-backed election deniers to oversee elections in Nevada and Pennsylvania, and next week, two more Big Lie candidates could win their party’s nominations in Wisconsin and Minnesota.
If even one or two of these candidates win in November, it could be enough to tip the balance in a close presidential election and plunge the country into constitutional chaos.
Between now and November, we must do everything we can to alert voters about what's at stake — especially young people, who tend to vote less often in midterm elections. Our creative team is producing eye-catching, super-shareable viral videos to spread the word to the millions of people following us across social media, and then getting those folks to share those videos with their friends, and their friends, and so on.
But to run this campaign at the scale we need to win, we need to raise more money than we ever have for any midterm election. That’s why I’m asking you: Will you make a donation to Inequality Media Civic Action and help get the truth out to save our democracy from the Trump cronies who are trying to take over our elections?
Thank you for helping to defend our democracy,
Robert Reich
