A MESSAGE FROM THE JMC PRESIDENT

Revitalizing American Civic Education

Your support is strengthening civics so that together we restore a sense of common purpose

Dear friend of the Jack Miller Center,

This week I started my new job as president of the Jack Miller Center for Teaching America’s Founding Principles and History. This is a critical moment in the life of our country, and I am excited to get started.

I join the JMC following a dozen-year run in the public arena, serving in local government and in the state House and Senate in my home state of Washington. I got to experience the day-to-day work of self-government, to interact and solve problems with colleagues across the political spectrum, and to serve on behalf of thousands of hard-working citizens who taught me much about the promise of America.

I came away hopeful about our continued capacity to work together as fellow Americans for the good of our communities and our country.

At the same time, I worry. I worry that our sense of common purpose is at risk. I worry that we are losing sight of the core principles that allow us to keep this experiment in freedom alive. And I worry that we are failing to pass along the meaning of America to the next generation.

I have spoken to countless citizens in recent years who share these worries. So when I announced that I would be going to work at the Jack Miller Center, friends told me that they were glad to learn of an organization that is working to advance the teaching of the American political tradition. Some said they only wish they had known of it sooner!

Before beginning my new role here, I learned of the impact of JMC’s programs.

In June, I got the pleasure of meeting the 20 newest JMC Fellows at JMC’s 29^th Summer Institute, held in Denver. In a time when progressive ideology is dominating campuses, I was taken aback by this smart and passionate group of college educators dedicated to the study and teaching of America’s founding principles and history. And they join some 1,000 scholars in our national community of professors who share the JMC mission.

I also got the chance to meet K-12 teachers who attended our summer program in St. Petersburg, Florida. I saw the level of enthusiasm and gratitude for this (surprisingly rare) content-based program specially designed for social studies teachers to deepen their knowledge of what they teach. The teachers had the chance to learn from top JMC scholars and work with fellow K-12 educators to develop lessons for their own students. This summer alone, we are holding 17 programs for K-12 teachers across eight states.

Long story short, what we simply call programs are fundamental to civic education reform. JMC gives professors and teachers access to deeper education, an array of resources, and a growing national network. The results are phenomenal.

Young Americans deserve to learn about the vision set forth by our founders in an honest and responsible manner. I cannot wait to spread the message of JMC’s work across our nation and how it is revitalizing American civic education!

Beginning this fall, we are building on the success of our teacher programs and expanding our offerings at both the K-12 and university levels! We will be sure to keep you apprised.

I would love to hear from you as I get started in my new role, and I welcome your ideas for how we can grow this movement to carry on our American political tradition to new generations.

Yours gratefully,
Hans Zeiger
