So, good news and slightly less good news, as recorded by FCW.com:


In a newly released letter responding to questions from Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), Assistant DNI for Legislative Affairs Benjamin Fallon wrote that intelligence agencies stopped collecting cell site location information (CSLI) under Section 215 of the Patriot Act following the Carpenter v. United States Supreme Court decision last year.

The good news is obvious: the federal government says it has stopped spying on us by collecting phone location data.

The less good news? They haven't promised they won't do it again.

It's unconscionable that Americans should be forced to choose between liberty and security because of the government's flagrant disregard for your constitutional freedoms.

Cell phone tracking like this is little more than a warrantless search, which the Supreme Court has ruled is unconstitutional.

I've been fighting for your constitutional rights for my entire career. Abuse of Americans' phone location data is the next frontier, and it's a big one.

Promises aren't enough. Congress must put strong, black-letter laws on the books that protect our information from government overreach.
