Hi there Friend,
As you read this message, do you feel safe? Whether you are at home, on the go, or at a cafe - do you feel safe? Most Oaklanders, no matter where we live, are concerned about what keeps us safe at our homes, in our churches, in our cars, at our schools, and in our streets.
As Zach Norris, the previous executive director of the Ella Baker Center, says in the title of his book, “We Keep Us Safe.” He, along with Van Jones and others, advocate for moving towards a safer future by embracing the politics of care and compassion and rejecting the politics of fear. |
When it comes to keeping us free from fear and intentional harm, we collectively debate the role of economic opportunity, availability of social services, mental health interventions, access to guns and the best uses of law enforcement. In reality, all these tools are part of the solutions we seek.
I know that success is possible, but only with the people. That’s why I’m humbly asking you to join me in creating a better Oakland – one filled with hope and healing. Will you support the movement by donating today? |
