Mandela's path to elected office was never a given.
His mom was a Milwaukee school teacher for 30 years and his dad worked 3rd shift at the General Motors plant. But he took the opportunities he found and chose to serve his community.
He became a state representative and serves as Wisconsin’s first Black lieutenant governor today. It wasn't easy, but his parents taught him to never settle for what is — but to reach for what can be.
