John,
Thank you to everyone who contributed to CREW’s July matching challenge—hundreds of you donated, supporting our work building a stronger democracy and ensuring we can keep it up for the long haul. We truly appreciate it.
Here’s just some of the work we’ve been up to lately, made possible by hundreds of CREW supporters:
-
We’ve fought for years for a bipartisan ban on Congressional stock ownership and we’re closer than ever, but it’s going to be up to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to get a bill over the finish line. That’s why we recently sent a letter, along with 21 other good government groups, to Pelosi and Schumer, calling on them to publicly commit to bringing a stock ban to a vote in early September. Read more here—and we’ll be in touch soon with ways you can help build momentum to get a stock ban passed.
-
In 2020 and early 2021, Trump and his allies weaponized vague language in the Electoral Count Act as part of their efforts to overturn the election. Reforming the ECA is crucial to shoring up our democracy against future attempts at subversion, and fortunately, the Senate is considering possible reforms. We sent a letter to Schumer in support of the proposed reforms, with several suggestions for ways to further strengthen the reforms.

After the final January 6th committee hearing for the summer—the committee plans to hold additional hearings in September—I published an op-ed in Salon about the need for Attorney General Merrick Garland to act on investigating and charging Trump. The evidence we already knew and the substantial new evidence of criminality presented in the hearings make it clear that a non-prosecution decision at this point would demonstrate that Donald Trump is above the law. Now that the January 6th Committee has done its job, it’s time for Garland to do his.

After Mark Meadows left Congress to become Donald Trump’s chief of staff in March 2020, CREW filed an FEC complaint about what appeared to be a misuse of campaign funds on personal expenses. We recently learned that while the Meadows campaign acknowledged misspending $2,655 of campaign funds, the FEC declined to take any further action. This is part of a pattern of the FEC closing complaints, even when wrongdoing is likely or certain—a troubling pattern that highlights the need for real campaign finance reform.
In the coming weeks, we’ll be working hard to get a Congressional stock trading ban passed, pushing for accountability for Trump and insurrectionists, and exposing the corporate funders of the Sedition Caucus. Thank you again for your support—we couldn’t do this work without supporters like you.
