Jack, Kansas voters gave abortion rights a resounding and undeniable victory by rejecting a ballot measure aimed at stripping away their constitutional rights to access abortion care.

Kansas was the first states where abortion is on the ballot in the post-Roe era, but it won't be the last—two more states have ballot initiatives this year. Please donate $5 now to activists in Kentucky and Michigan who are fighting to protect abortion rights at the ballot box.

There is no doubt that this was an uphill battle for Kansans For Constitutional Freedom, the grassroots organization fighting to turn out voters in the deep red state to defeat this ballot measure. Republicans erected barriers to discourage, confuse, and manipulate voters about the measure: The vote was held on what is traditionally a low-turnout primary election day in the middle of the summer, the ballot measure itself was worded in a way to confuse voters and the day before the election, misleading texts were sent to voters telling them to "Vote YES to protect women’s health.”

This victory isn't just that voters decide against removing the right to abortion from the state constitution, they did so in a big way. The referendum was defeated by a margin of roughly 60-40. However, as David points out, more voters showed up to vote against this ballot measure than the governor primaries combined.

This is the kind of enthusiasm Democrats need from now until November, and if we can pull this off in Kansas—an island of reproductive rights in a sea of forced birth states—it's good news for November.
