This has been an exciting week for the future of Michigan's economy. On Tuesday, I joined President Biden, Senator Peters, Senator Stabenow, and Congressman Kildee to celebrate the CHIPS and Science Act ? bipartisan federal legislation that will boost American manufacturing, create and protect tens of thousands of jobs, and lower costs for working families.?
Over the past year, I have worked to bring Republicans and Democrats across the country together to advocate for this critical legislation. This act will make a once-in-a-century investment in American industry to create and protect tens of thousands of jobs, bring supply chain from China to Michigan, and help lower costs for working families on electronics, cars, and more. ?
Everyone knows that Michiganders make the best cars and trucks on the planet. Our legendary auto industry and generations of union families put Michigan on the map. But we also know the stark impact that the chip shortage is having on our auto industry. We need to move fast, and that?s why I signed an executive directive on Tuesday preparing Michigan to harness every available resource from the CHIPS and Science Act to set up our state for decades of growth.?
That growth is already underway. This year alone, we?ve announced: ?
-
A $7 billion investment from GM creating and retaining 5,000 jobs building electric vehicles and batteries.?
-
A $1.7 billion investment from LG Energy Solution creating 1,200 jobs building electric vehicle batteries and battery components.?
-
A $2 billion investment from Ford increasing manufacturing capacity at several Southeast Michigan plants.?
-
And earlier this week, an $83 million investment from Stellantis into the Dundee Engine Complex here in Michigan.?
Once President Biden signs the CHIPS and Science Act, the benefits will be felt far and wide. While the benefits to our mighty auto industry are clear, chips have a widespread impact ? they are the force behind countless devices and machines we use every day.?
Michigan is putting the world on notice. With the executive directive I signed yesterday, we will be ready to compete for every project, job, and resource. Let?s show everyone that Michigan is the place to build the future. ?
Gretchen Whitmer Governor of Michigan
