Dear John,
Democracy is in retreat worldwide and has been for the past 16 years, according to the Freedom in the World 2022 report. There are many contributing factors to this decline, most of them are not new. In fact, you can open almost any history book and find parallels from the past to the present. That’s one of the many good things about history books.
This week, in the first installment of a new series, Freedom House staff assemble some of their favorite books that help explain the decline of freedom worldwide and give us advice for building a better and freer world of tomorrow.
