Pittsburgh, monkeypox is in our backyard.

Though the monkeypox case count numbered only 29 as of Aug. 1, Allegheny County health officials are cautioning the public that it will continue to rise and sharing details about what the virus entails. Much of the public health messaging has grappled with an overemphasis of monkeypox's prevalence among men who have sex with men, which some health professionals believe could lead to clinicians and citizens dismissing it too readily.

PublicSource audience engagement editor TyLisa Johnson reacted to questions about monkeypox from our audience and others in the Pittsburgh region by interviewing two of the county's top health officials.

Here’s a big takeaway: Anyone can get monkeypox.

Read the explainer ([link removed]) to help answer burning questions about the virus: What’s the risk for kids? Is it deadly? Is it an STD? And, it features vaccination and prevention information.
