Dear john,

Thank you for reading this brief overview of my activity during July.

In Parliament, I spoke during the summer adjournment debate to draw attention to a number of pressing local issues in our area. I also spoke in a Westminster Hall debate regarding careers guidance in schools and Chaired an APPG Sovereign Defence Manufacturing Capability meeting.

Locally, I attended several community events and met with local businesses to hear more about expansion plans, employment opportunities and updates on apprenticeship schemes in our area.

I also attended the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford for meetings with representatives at some of the key aerospace and defence organisations from our area - many of which offer particularly strong apprenticeship opportunities, a career pathway which I have long advocated with passion. I also met some of these organisations and apprentices at parliamentary events, including several during the Farnborough Air Show week.

I hope you find this newsletter useful and informative. As ever, please follow my work and activity via social media if you can (Facebook ([link removed]) and Twitter ([link removed]) ) and/or my website ([link removed]) .

If there is ever anything I can help you with, or you want to book a surgery appointment, please do get in touch. My office is open from Monday to Friday between 9am and 6pm and can be contacted by email via [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) or by calling 01454 617783.

Best wishes,
Jack Lopresti MP

** In Parliament
------------------------------------------------------------
During July, I spoke in a Westminster Hall debate and in the House of Commons chamber.

I was pleased to speak in a Westminster Hall debate regarding careers guidance in schools, on the debut appearance for Andrea Jenkyns MP as Education Minister (Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Skills, Further and Higher Education). I emphasised that more needs to be done to encourage the take up of apprenticeships and indeed the benefits of apprenticeships across the UK.

I congratulated my wife, Andrea, on her new ministerial appointment and I was pleased she agreed with me that apprenticeships are a fantastic vehicle for social mobility, defending our country and creating employment opportunities.

In the chamber, I spoke in the first Sir David Amess Summer Adjournment debate. I drew attention to a number of pressing local issues in our area, including the frustrating situation with the M49 junction, our local levelling-up bid for the restoration of a Grade II listed WW1 aircraft hangar at Filton Airfield and the strategic importance and benefits of our local aerospace, aviation and defence industries.

I also chaired a fascinating session at the APPG Sovereign Defence Manufacturing Capability meeting with Make UK, where we discussed the challenges and opportunities in this vitally important sector - and how we can support SMEs to win more commercial opportunities with the MOD.

** Surgeries around our area
------------------------------------------------------------
I regularly hold surgeries across our local area, including: Stoke Gifford, Almondsbury, Bradley Stoke, Winterbourne, Severn Beach, Pilning and Frenchay (pictured above).

To make an appointment for a future surgery, or if I can help you with an issue, please call my office via 01454 617 783, visit: [link removed] ([link removed]) or email me at: [email protected] (mailto:[email protected])

** Future jobs panel discussion with Conservative Home
------------------------------------------------------------
I was pleased to be invited to speak at the Conservative Home Future Jobs Conference at the Royal Society of Arts (RSA).

It was an interesting discussion hosted by Mark Wallace (editor of Conservative Home). Alongside me on the panel were Matthew Elliott (CEO of the Taxpayers' Alliance and formerly Vote Leave) and Jade Marsden (Conservative mayoral candidate in Liverpool).

** Appointed Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party
------------------------------------------------------------
In early July, I was honoured to be appointed Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party.

My areas of responsibility over the last few weeks have included hosting two leadership Q&A hustings events. The first of these was for Conservative Policy Forum members (CPF) and took place at CCHQ in Leeds with Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss attending in person. A further session took place in Filton attended by members of the Bristol & South Gloucestershire Conservatives (BSG) Executive with Mark Harper MP (representing Team Sunak) and Jacob Rees-Mogg MP (representing Team Truss).

It is necessary for me to remain publicly neutral, but I am pleased that we have had such a fantastic, talented and diverse range of candidates standing to be leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister of our great country. I am sure that each of the finalists would make an excellent Prime Minister and I very much look forward to working with the candidate elected by the membership.

** Events in the community
------------------------------------------------------------
In July, it was great to be back at the Frenchay Flower Show, the first for three years. Some beautiful displays and some lovely classic cars. I was also very pleased to be asked to present the prizes, which saw Kelvin Bush (pictured) win several!

I attended the Severn Vale Festival in Severn Beach and dropped into the Compton Café in Easter Compton to celebrate their first year anniversary. The café is open on the second Saturday of every month and well worth a visit.

I also dropped into St Peter’s Community Coffee Shop where I met a number of residents and discussed some local issues which required my help. The coffee shop is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10am to 1pm.

** Visiting local businesses and community groups
------------------------------------------------------------
It was great to meet with Jodie Wilson and the team working on the Way to Work Campaign. During our meeting, we discussed how they have been maintaining high employment levels in our local area and the importance of local childcare provision and effective public transport.

I also returned to The Wave to meet with Nick and Craig, where again the need for more and better public transport was discussed, as well as upcoming job opportunities and nearby infrastructure developments. I also had a look at some of the fantastic on-site accommodation available here.

I likewise enjoyed revisiting the residents at Giffard House along with a representative from Bromford Housing Association, to discuss ongoing issues of concern to residents. It was a very constructive discussion which generated a number of issues which require my assistance.

** Meeting local aerospace & defence companies and apprentices
------------------------------------------------------------
At the Royal International Air Tattoo, one of the largest military air shows in the world, I had meetings with Boeing, Airbus, Elbit Systems and Aeralis Jet. We discussed our UK Sovereign Defence Capability and local employment and apprenticeship opportunities.

During Farnborough Air Show week, I welcomed Boeing back to Parliament and met with Managing Director Anna Keeling and some fantastic apprentices, (including Joseph and Asha - pictured above).

** Local issues: GP appointments
------------------------------------------------------------
I had a good meeting with Gavin Richards and his team at Stoke Gifford Medical Practice. The team here are clearly working very hard to meet very high demand for appointments. I thanked them for everything they are doing and I was pleased and supportive to hear of their future expansion plans in line with the building of more new homes in our area.

** Making the most of the outdoors this summer
------------------------------------------------------------
This week I managed to get a days walking in. I went to the Brecon Beacons with an old Army friend.

I hope you all manage to get some time this August to relax with family and friends.

As always, should you need my help with anything, my office is open from Monday to Friday between 9am and 6pm. Please telephone me on 01454 617783 or email me at: [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) if I can be of assistance.
