Commissioner's Column

I am really excited about the opportunity to lead the team at the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission as acting Commissioner, and to present my first Commissioner’s Column in The Charitable Purpose. I will serve as acting Commissioner until the end of October, or until the position is filled on a permanent basis.

I have joined at an exciting time for the ACNC. The Annual Charity Law Association of Australia and New Zealand (CLAANZ) Conference, and accompanying ACNC Regulators Day, were held last week.

A few of the most common questions we have been hearing from charities recently...

Q. I received an email saying that our 2021 Annual Information Statement is overdue. What do I need to do?

A. If your charity has not yet submitted the 2021 Annual Information Statement, and it is overdue, you need to submit it as soon as possible by logging into the Charity Portal. [[link removed]]

Once in the Portal, select your charity and click on ‘Manage reporting’.

You do not need to contact the ACNC before completing the AIS, even if it is overdue.

Submit any overdue reporting as soon as possible to avoid potential penalties.

Q: I heard about the new online learning program. Who should be doing the courses?

A. The new Governing Charities online learning program of short courses [[link removed]] has been designed to help charity leaders and support good governance and accountability in the sector.

If you are in a leadership role at a charity, the program will boost the skills and expertise you need to perform your role successfully and effectively.

The courses have been designed independently of each other, so you can do one course or all of them, in any order.

And best of all, the courses are all completely free!
