Dems Take Steps to Fight Climate Change |
We still have 52 days of what has felt like the hottest summer ever. We have been hearing and reading and watching content on how the Colorado River is drying up and climate change has felt more real than ever before. But have heart dear reader, as the Democrats have introduced some of the most progressive climate action initiatives EVER!
As part of the Inflation Reduction Act, which includes nearly $370 billion in climate spending which will aim for a 40% emissions reduction by 2030. As this bill is being submitted as the FY2022 Budget Reconciliation bill it still has a few more hoops to jump through before passing. However it has already been submitted to the Senate Parliamentarian, and could come up for a vote in the coming weeks. So what would it do for climate change? According to the summary provided by the US Senate Dems:
1. Lowers energy costs for Americans through policies that will lower prices at the pump and on electricity bills, help consumers afford technologies that will lower emissions and energy prices, and reduce costs that would otherwise be passed on to them.
2. Increases American energy security through policies to support energy reliability and cleaner production coupled with historic investments in American clean energy manufacturing to lessen our reliance on China, ensuring that the transition to a clean economy creates millions of American manufacturing jobs, and is powered by American-made clean technologies.
3. Invests in decarbonizing all sectors of the economy through targeted federal support of innovative climate solutions. 4. Focuses investments into disadvantaged communities to ensure that communities that are too-often left behind will share in the benefits of the transition to a clean economy.
5. Supports resilient rural communities by investing in farmers and forestland owners to be part of growing climate solutions, and by ensuring rural and communities are able to better adapt to a rapidly changing climate. If this moves forward the Democrats will need a simple majority to pass this bill and that's why it's so important we keep majorities in the Senate and House this year!

The Inflation Reduction Act Explained |
The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) will make the largest investment to fight climate change in history, reduce our deficit, lower costs and help fight inflation for hard-working Coloradans.
CNN wrote, "This historic legislation makes crucial investments in energy, health care, and in shoring up the nation’s tax system. These investments will fight inflation and lower costs for American families while setting the stage for strong, stable, and broadly-shared long-term economic growth,’ 126 economists said in a letter sent to congressional leadership Tuesday, which was first obtained by CNN.”
From Sen. Michael Bennet, “Washington has spent decades cutting taxes for the wealthiest Americans and exploding our deficit instead of making responsible choices for our future. The Inflation Reduction Act represents a historic break from those failed policies. It will lower the costs of energy, health care, and prescription drugs for Coloradans. It makes the largest investment ever to fight climate change and reduce our dependence on foreign, oil-rich dictators. It adopts my proposal to ensure the biggest corporations finally pay their fair share. And unlike Trump’s tax cuts for the wealthy, this bill is not only paid for — it reduces the federal deficit by over $300 billion. We have to get this done for Colorado and the country.”
The new proposal for the FY2022 Budget Reconciliation bill will invest approximately $300 billion in Deficit Reduction and $369 billion in Energy Security and Climate Change programs over the next ten years.
The Inflation Reduction Act : - Enacts historic deficit reduction to fight inflation
- Lowers energy costs, increases cleaner production, and reduces carbon emissions by roughly 40 percent by 2030
-
Allows Medicare to negotiate drug prices and caps out-of-pocket costs to $2,000
- Lowers ACA health care premiums for millions of Americans
- Make biggest corporations and ultra-wealthy pay their fair share
-
There are no new taxes on families making $400,000 or less and no new taxes on small businesses – we are closing tax loopholes and enforcing the tax code.

SD11 State Senate Candidate: Tony Exum
|
|
|
I am incredibly proud of the work we have done to support the people of Colorado Springs, and the state of Colorado.
I am running for State Senator to continue working for the people of Colorado Springs—to help grow the economy and expand opportunities for all Coloradans, and to ensure that every Colorado child has access to a world-class education and the tools to succeed in their future career.
A retired Battalion Chief with the Colorado Springs Fire Department, I spent over thirty-five years making our community safer. As a father and grandfather, I know what it means for our children to get a good education. Whether it is fighting fires, bringing different people together to solve problems, officiating high school and college basketball and softball, or training the next generation of firefighters to follow in a tradition of public service, I have put our community first for decades.
I learned from my service to the people of Colorado Springs that it takes hard work, a caring heart and tenacity to be the change you want to see in the world. I am asking the citizens of this community: “Do you care enough?” I am rallying like-minded individuals and businesses to come together in continuing conversations on what is needed and how we can make southeastern Colorado Springs a better place to live, work and raise a family. |

I am proud of my record serving the community over the last 37 years—as a Colorado Springs firefighter and Battalion Chief, and as a state representative. During my time in office, I fought to help create good jobs in our community, to boost investments in our local schools, and to provide “breakfast after the bell” to ensure that kids are prepared to learn and don’t start off the school day on an empty stomach. I look forward to continuing conversations with my community over the next year, and I hope to have the honor of earning your vote to represent the people of southeastern Colorado Springs once again—as State Senator for Senate District 11.
Much like past House races, this Senate race will be one of the most competitive in the state, if not the most competitive. If you are able, I will need your support on the doors, on the phones, and your contributions. I thank you in advance. Sincerely, Tony Exum Sr. |
