We’ve received some big news in this race that has exposed the record of my opponent in the Democratic primary.
Shannon Hutcheson voted Republican in a critical year for Obamacare, donated to Republicans, worked on behalf of corporations hurting working people, represented private prisons that are facilitating family separation, and protected a prison guard who sexually assaulted migrant women in detention. Now, Hutcheson is challenging me for the Democratic nomination.
Today, more than ever, I need your support so we can win this crucial race.
I have spent my career fighting for people as a public servant, first as a public school teacher and union organizer, and then as a civil rights lawyer, fighting for at-risk students, mistreated workers, immigrant families and people looking for housing.
I don’t think the distinction could be more clear.
We need someone who will bring a real alternative to the GOP’s anti-worker and anti-immigrant agenda — not further it.
When I was an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Austin, I sued to strike down Texas’ Senate Bill 4, an anti-immigrant, “show-me-your-papers” bill. When I ran for Congress in 2018, I successfully fought to update the Texas Democratic Party platform — to include a strong opposition to private immigration jails.
Here’s the thing: Hutcheson has been able to raise a lot of money because of her wealthy corporate connections. She hopes to cover up her record as a corporate attorney with TV ads and direct mail. This makes it even more important that we build a massive grassroots movement for political change.
