For far too long now, secret-money special interests have had an enormous influence in our politics. When elected officials listen to their big-money donors instead of everyday constituents, it’s inevitable that legislative priorities will tip in favor of donors.
And while Congress has yet to pass legislation that would put an end to this practice, there are actions President Biden can take now by issuing an executive order that would require large federal contractors to disclose their political spending.
The American people are entitled to know about the political contributions of those who are paid with taxpayer dollars for the services and products they provide to the federal government: for example, providing us with essential services like repairing our roads and bridges. It’s critical we disclose this secret spending by government contractors so we can rest assured that our tax dollars go to the most qualified to do the job.
Americans of both parties overwhelmingly support getting big money out of politics. But as the forces for reform in Congress have been repeatedly stymied, undisclosed campaign contributions continue to corrupt our politics and drown out our voices.
While federal contractor disclosures are just a part of the massive problem with money in politics, it’s important to continue making progress towards reducing or eliminating its impact altogether.
