John, we know you’ve definitely felt the difference this summer. Temperatures are higher than normal and longer than normal.
Nearly 100 million Americans were affected by last month’s heatwave. Extreme temperatures expanded not only from coast to coast in the States but also across Europe as well.
Both of these heatwaves are connected and may become the new normal in our climate future. This is largely due to the jet stream, which runs across the northern hemisphere. Jet streams are powered by the polar and equator temperature differences.
Scientists have speculated that rising global temperatures – particularly the changes occurring along the North and South Poles – would slow down the jet stream and contort it to create heat domes. The result is dangerously high temperatures that last longer than in the past, precisely what we saw happen in July.
Fortunately, action is being taken. The Biden administration announced it would give $2.3 billion in FEMA funds to help communities impacted by the severe heat. These funds will be used to prepare for heatwaves, wildfires, droughts, and other extreme effects of climate change.
And we also must not forget about outdoor workers whose very livelihood puts their lives at risk unless they are given meaningful protections. That is why SEEC Members Bobby Scott and Raúl Grijalva co-introduced the Asunción Valdivia Heat Illness and Fatality Prevention Act to protect workers from occupational heat exposure.
SEEC members are working to push forward meaningful, substantive action on climate, both to curb global warming but also to help us adapt to its worst effects. They understand who feels the consequences and that saving our Earth is a time-sensitive mission. Will you contribute to their work to stop extreme heat and ensure comprehensive action on the climate crisis, John? [[link removed]]

Thanks to your help in 2020, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 117th Congress while we undo the damage of the Trump Administration.
