Kansas voters defeated an attack on abortion access, proving that when abortion is on the ballot, we can turn out and win.
Dear MoveOn member,
Have you heard the breaking news out of Kansas that could be gamechanging for this year's elections?
Abortion was on the ballot in Kansas yesterday. And pro-Roe voters—motivated by the aggressive attacks against abortion access—rejected a right-wing ballot initiative in a conservative state by huge margins.
In doing so, these voters saved abortion access in the state's constitution—and sent a critical message for this November's midterm elections: When we turn out to fight for abortion access, we win.
As Kansans just proved, abortion access is popular, motivating, and can have deep impact on elections. And that's why MoveOn is building a massive, people-powered get-out-the-vote operation for November's critical midterm races—and talking loudly and honestly about abortion access being at stake.
Republicans want to aggressively pursue abortion bans—from seeking measures to criminalize people seeking abortions and medical providers on the state level to openly discussing a national abortion ban if they take control of Congress. Meanwhile, they want to keep empowering a right-wing Trump-packed Supreme Court to go after contraception and marriage equality next.
Democrats in the House of Representatives have already passed a bill to codify the protections of Roe into law—but as with so many important measures, it crashed into the Republican abuse of the reactionary filibuster in the Senate. However, if Democrats can elect two more bold, progressive senators committed to undoing the filibuster to pass protections for abortion access—while holding the House—then Democrats can deliver these protections for essential health care on a national level.
That's right: Hold the House. Increase the Senate majority by two. And we can defeat these abortion bans.
If we see numbers like those we saw in Kansas yesterday—where abortion access voters turned out in majority numbers in districts that had gone for Trump and in overwhelming numbers in areas that had voted for Biden—we'll see swing House districts move Democratic, and we'll see dynamic Senate candidates win in Georgia, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and more.
Is it hard? It sure is. Just as it's hard to win a ballot initiative on abortion rights in Kansas. But pro-Roe Kansas voters just did it.
Thanks for all you do.
