** Hi
Friend of Trevor,
------------------------------------------------------------
It’s a new year here at The Trevor Project — a new fiscal year, that is! And as Trevor’s Chief Operating Officer, it’s a busy and exciting time, as we prepare to expand our LGBTQ youth crisis intervention and suicide prevention services.
That forward momentum includes taking Trevor’s mission global! In the next few months, we will begin to provide mental health support to LGBTQ young people in Mexico, while continuing our work in the U.S.
I grew up in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in the 1970s, and it was hard to come out in an era and a culture where there wasn’t a lot of awareness about LGBTQ people. I wish Trevor was there for me when I was 18. Even now — decades later — LGBTQ young people in Latin American cultures face significant, unique challenges compared to those from the Global North — including higher rates of poverty, violence, and homelessness.
Knowing this — and remembering my own personal struggles — I’m so proud to help Trevor bring its much-needed services to Mexico, where we estimate that approximately 745,000 young people face mental health challenges because of their LGBTQ identities.
Once we’re up and running in Mexico, we will use our resources there to serve Spanish-speaking LGBTQ young people in the U.S., too. And, because there are unlimited global opportunities for Trevor to help LGBTQ youth, we’re also planning to continue our life-saving work in more countries around the world.
This is all so exciting — and this work is so close to my heart. I hope you feel the same joy and pride because it’s kind, compassionate, and generous people like you who make all Trevor does possible — and our world a warmer, more welcoming place for LGBTQ young people.
We’ll be updating you in the months ahead about our plans to expand into Mexico and other countries — as well as what we’re doing in the U.S. to protect and support LGBTQ young people. Until then, please know how grateful I am to count you as a member of Trevor’s community.
United to serve LGBTQ young people,
Carlos Carrazana
