Last night the voters of Kansas sent a strong message:
If you let us VOTE we will vote to protect our rights!
The Kansas referendum on the ballot yesterday was the first statewide referendum on abortion since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade. The fact that, in a state Donald Trump won comfortably in 2020, voters overwhelmingly rejected a constitutional amendment that would have allowed state legislators to further restrict abortion access is a BIG DEAL.
Kansas' voters made clear that they trust women to make their own reproductive choices. And so should we. This should be a WAKE-UP call to my Senate Republican colleagues to stop blocking a vote in the Senate on the Women's Health Protection Act!
The truth is: we shouldn't be in this situation at all. Fundamental rights should not have to be decided at the ballot box. But since the Supreme Court won't stand up for fundamental reproductive freedoms or respect nearly 50 years of precedent then Americans will need to make their voices heard at the ballot box.
The results in Kansas demonstrate how important it is that we win at least two more Democratic Senate seats and end the anti-democratic filibuster that unfairly empowers senators representing an extreme minority view about abortion rights to impose their will on the overwhelming majority of the American people.
As my friend Congressman and Civil Rights leader John Lewis used to say: "The right to vote .. is the most powerful nonviolent tool or instrument in a democratic society. We must use it."
And that's exactly what we must do this November.
Onwards!
Chris
