NOTES FROM THE FIELD | 2022 | No. 6

TAKING CRITICAL ACTION FOR WILDLIFE

The 'akikiki, a type of Hawaiian honeycreeper, is a small gray and
white songbird found only in the highest elevations of Kaua'i's
rainforests. In recent years, rising temperatures caused by climate
change have allowed mosquitos carrying avian malaria and other deadly
diseases to move into higher elevations-and into the 'akikiki's
native habitat. This has been devastating for forest bird populations,
but with your support, we were able to take emergency action when
malaria threatened the last four 'akikiki in the Alaka'i Wilderness
preserve.

In December 2021, we rescued one of the four known remaining 'akikiki
and brought it to safety. It is now living with a breeding population
of 41 other 'akikiki in the care of experts at our Maui Bird
Conservation Center, where it will have the chance to pass on critical
genetic diversity to future generations.

As an ally, you make this critical mission and others possible through
our Pacific Islands conservation hub. Thank you for your continued
support as we save and protect wildlife worldwide.

ISLAND CONSERVATION

The Pacific Islands are a biodiversity hotspot

[link removed]

-home to an abundance of wildlife found nowhere else on Earth.
Despite their remote locations, the Pacific Islands are highly
vulnerable to invasive species and diseases, habitat fragmentation,
and the effects of climate change. Unfortunately, this also means the
islands have growing numbers of threatened and endangered species,
including the 'akikiki and the Galápagos pink iguana.
With you by our side, we are working to protect this biodiversity
through our Pacific Islands conservation hub.

SAVING A RARE PINK IGUANA

The Galápagos pink iguana lives life in the danger zone.
They're found exclusively in one extremely small, high-risk area
on Isla Isabela's active Wolf Volcano in the Galápagos
Islands. And with fewer than 300 iguanas left, these uniquely colored
lizards are now critically endangered. Through your support, our
conservation scientists are on the ground learning more about them and
their habitat, so we can devise plans to save them through our Pacific
Islands conservation hub.

STAND TALL, MSITUNI

When Msituni (pronounced see-tune-nee) was born at the San Diego Zoo
Safari Park on February 1, she had some trouble with her legs, and it
was difficult for her to stand or walk. Through your support, Msituni
was fitted with a pair of specialized, giraffe-patterned braces for
her front legs. Msituni is now running alongside the rest of the tower
at the Safari Park. You can see her during your next visit to the
Safari Park, or live on Giraffe Cam from anywhere in the world. You
make conservation innovation and incredible second chances like hers
possible, thank you!
