Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi visits Taiwan, creating tension with China.

The highly anticipated visit to Taiwan is the first by a U.S. official in 25 years. The trip prompted warnings that it could lead to more aggressive military action from China's proclaimed ownership over Taiwan. China responded sharply to the visit, repeatedly telling Pelosi to call the trip off.

First Jan. 6 Rioter to Face Trial Gets 7 Years

Guy Wesley Reffitt was the first defendant to go to trial in the Department of Justice’s criminal inquiry into the Jan. 6 attacks. On Monday, a federal judge sentenced Reffitt to more than seven years in prison, which is the longest sentence thus far in a Capitol riot case. 

Reffitt was found guilty on five felony charges, including obstructing Congress’s certification of the 2020 presidential election, carrying a .40-caliber pistol during the riot, and two counts of civil disorder.

Bill: The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022

The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 will fight inflation, invest in domestic energy production and manufacturing, and reduce carbon emissions by roughly 40% by 2030.
