John -
A massive $369 billion climate and energy package is moving through the US Senate this week. I'm sure you've seen the news — so I wanted to take a minute to share some reflections about it.
This email isn't going to tell you all you need to know about the bill — many of our partners have resources about that — but instead to mark this moment as one that you helped make happen.
Movement building creates political opportunities — and that's what this bill represents most of all.
The climate legislation in this package will unleash investment, innovation, and rapid renewable energy deployment in cities and states all over the country. It is momentous for a climate bill to focus so much of its impact on clean energy investments with such a toothful corporate tax rate.
Also take a moment to consider that the US government is finally demonstrating to our global allies that we are capable of passing a national climate law. Now, we are heading in the right direction as we set the stage for upcoming international climate negotiations like COP27.
But, there are some major issues. I strongly oppose the inclusion of fossil fuel investments in this, or any, climate bill. The bill is no Green New Deal, and we all must work to make sure the bill gets better.
So now that I've taken a moment to share my thoughts, I'd love to hear from you. What do you think, John?
Can you take our quick poll letting us know whether you support the climate bill in the US Senate?
Our movement has come a very long way in the fight to take down the fossil fuel industry since our organization was founded in 2008.
Which is why I'd like to offer my deep gratitude to the millions of people who marched, divested, locked down, lobbied, negotiated, built coalitions, called in, coached, donated, painted, prayed, sued, facilitated, and had Zoom meetings to get us all to this point.
Keep going. We can't stop now.
In solidarity,
May Boeve
