Dear Friend,

Located approximately 100 miles southeast of the Statue of Liberty, there is a giant underwater chasm comparable to the Grand Canyon.

This place is called Hudson Canyon, and it's more than seven miles wide and two miles deep at its lowest point.[1] It's also home to endangered whales, sharks and sea turtles.[2]

For the sake of current and future generations of people and wildlife, we're working to ensure Hudson Canyon becomes a national marine sanctuary. This would ensure the canyon and its connected ecosystems are off-limits to oil drilling.

Sign our petition in support of designating Hudson Canyon a national marine sanctuary.

More than 200 species of fish and 17 kinds of marine mammals reside in Hudson Canyon. It's also visited by migrating birds and whales that stop there to feed.[3] Hudson Canyon is a biodiversity hotspot that deserves to be protected.

If Hudson Canyon becomes a national marine sanctuary, it will receive protections similar to a national park. The underwater area could also be permanently closed to oil, gas and mineral development.[4]

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is evaluating a proposal to make Hudson Canyon a national marine sanctuary and is accepting public input. NOAA is legally obligated to review all comments and consider them in its decision-making. By adding your name to our petition, you'll help build the necessary support to see the proposal finalized.

NOAA is only accepting public input through Aug 8. Submit your comment today.
